Why There are no IGMs/Other Places

Postby the mystical one on Thu Jun 09, 2005 8:43 am

We here at Nuklear LORD feel that it's best to play a pure game of lord. In Game Modules (IGMs), also known as Other Places are frequently filled with bugs and other actions that can give very unfair advantage to players.

Many include ways to rack up excessive exp or gold, steal gold and abilities from other players, etc. Some also have bugs that let players in the know advance very quickly and that aren't obvious to most players.

So to keep the game on a more level playing field, we don't have any.

Silver girl gave a good explanation too, so I'll add it here for posterity:
Silver Girl wrote:the explanation as to why there are no (o)ther places. it's because in the (o)ther places, you can go from level 1 to 12 in one day, you can get billions of dollars, you can do all sorts of crazy things like sick a mad dog on a person, or set up a bear trap to catch the next person that goes to that place. it's totally bizarre and therefore impossible to compete fairly.

Also, we can't completely trust the "Other Places" to be completely legit. Many of them were written by people who just wanted to cheat at LORD on their local BBS.

They could also be a security risk. Any add-on to LORD could give you a DOS shell if it wanted to, or even delete random files.

I agree with all that has been said. But what about the really cheesy ones that don't further your character exponentially. I remember IGN's on old BBS' that were there for fun and totally useless.

Yeah, but are those practical when you have 3 realms with close to 150 players a pop?

Didn't think so.

Someone with "mad skillz" should make an IGM. It has been mentioned that a lot of them were made so people could cheat on their own BBS. If someone here made one with fair play in mind, that could be fun.

I don't have any "mad skillz."

Mad Skilz! LoL I used to program in Turbo Pascal back in high school in the early 90's. I used to be a good programmer when it came to projects but failed badly in my Comp Sci C++ course in college. I had a B+ in the course did awsome on the projects like A and A- but when it came to the final the question asked for a Calculus derivative program worth 70% of the exam!!! The problem was I was failed badly attempting calculus, so I couldn't do the program! I ended up with a D in Comp sci.

The bottem line is that as a hands on person I can do well but when it comes to university exams I really bombed it!

Oh well in the end it worked out as I did not end up a programmer but in Linux administration :P

I wouldn't mind harmless IGMs, ones that just have silly and useless stats you can check... nothing that can actually change the game... no billion dollar cheats.

I loved playing in The Graveyard, if anyone remembers that one. I think it was like... you had so many chances to dig up graves and it was always just like $1,000 or 100XP. It was always fun to play in. I think you'd dig up "nothing", too. The ones I remember weren't ever cheater-friendly, actually.

I remember one that was a casino that was so bugged you could bet negative amounts of money and if you lost, it gave you cash. Just go and play blackjack and keep hitting until you bust so you lose every time.

I was level 4 when i found the bug (at the time, i was a professional software beta tester so looking for bugs was second nature to me). I bought the most expensive weapon and armor and killed the admin who was level 12, leveled up and killed the dragon.

I tried to explain to him how i did it and even how it could be prevented/repaired but he was so upset with me that i was not allowed to play anymore. :whistles:

I have many hundreds of dollars worth of books on programming and computers etc., and I would love to develop for the Nuklear LORD team. I am always overwhelmed with papers and exams lately though and don't believe taking on any further obligations would be smart.

If ever you need some help and believe me to be useful, drop me a line.

the only mod I remember was a castle one, had a bunch of stuff you could do, sometimes you would help a mouse and he would make others in the module like you better, best was when he put in a word with the alchamist. could get an infanite amount of gold and gems provided you either had some gold or a gem to start with... seriously broken but a lot of fun, espically at low levels

Which is why I'm GLAD we have no IGMs here... I'm seriously breaking a couple realms with them. lol

I might have to retire from Gargoyle's LORD... it's too easy. At least I can still play here - and play TW2002 there.

Maybe I should be nicer to people here...
