Important Notification: Round 38 - Green Realm

Postby injektilo on Mon Jan 11, 2010 4:30 pm

Hi everyone

As you would well know, the player numbers have been significantly lower the past few rounds and in many ways, this has made the game a little harder to play and has meant stalking the realms has been needed to get good kills with some regularity. Obviously not all players have the time to do so and there has been a lot of comments that there are not enough players currently.

The good news is we are working on this as i type. We are about to begin a small advertising campaign and we're working on re-jigging a few things round the site to make it more accommodating for new players, enabling them to better understand the game. This should mean they are more compliant with the realm rules and hopefully enjoy the game more and stick around!

However, we have decided to make one significant change for the next round. We are closing Green Realm. Please note, this is only a temporary move and we don't have any plans for the closure to last any longer than one round. Our idea is to enable us to have some time to get a few of our ideas off the ground and to boost the player numbers in Blue and Red Realms in the meantime.

But why Green realm?
Simple. Nuklear started with one realm and then grew to two, Blue and Red. Green was the logical choice as it's rule set sits in the middle. Now we have Blue realm for camping/relaxed play and Red realm for duel killing/heavy competition play. A return to the past I guess you could say!

Will Green realm reopen?
We certainly hope so! At this stage we plan to reopen in when the next round ends.

So which round should I join now?
If you're keen to climb the ranks each day, have a ruthless streak and like to play rough, come to Red realm. If you prefer to take things a little easier and don't want to be concerned about people duelling you whilst you are online, then head to Blue realm.

The differences between the realms are really not that great. Campers in Blue realm can provide a hurdle, but they can also provide a quick exp boost to avoid level 11 hell! Red realm may sound scary with duel killing, however if you are a little careful about when you log on (i.e. not when a higher level player is online) then you will be very unlikely to be killed. It's possible to go a round without being duel killed at all.

OK, i'm not happy! This sucks. Reopen Green realm or else!
We know some people will be upset about this and we understand, however we feel it's necessary to boost player numbers for the short term and keep the players we currently have. We're using our crystal ball a little here, but we believe closing Green realm will help us achieve these goals. If it doesn't work, we'll reopen it next round and eat a very large slice of humble pie. Live on Nuklear!

You mentioned that you're rejigging some things around the site. I want to help!
Great! A couple of things that are needed are suggestions on rewriting the rules to more easily allow new players to understand them. Perhaps you could ask a friend who doesn't play to read them and see if they make sense? We also need information added to the Wiki, a new player tutorial written and any other little bits of polish you think might add to the site and help new players enjoy the site more.

So this is all about new players?
Right on. Over time players come and players go, but as LoRD gets older, there are less people who played it as a child, so we need to encourage those that are here to continue and help new players see the magic behind such a simple, yet thoroughly complex text based adventure game. New players will help fill our realms, making the game more enjoyable for everyone.

If you have any questions, criticism, ideas, suggestions, etc let us know either via a post here or PM.

I just want to say that I don't like this decision and don't like that it was made without any kind of mandate from the community.
I think 60 Plus players is enough for a good game and both Green and Red realm finished within a week of Blue realm; so I don't see how it is a problem.
I would say if you want to boost the number of players then let us play in (2) colored realms this round.

That being said, ( & since I have lttle choice about it) I will play in Red next round and I'm gonna smoke all of your Arses!!!
So get your GamE oN.

i knew it wouldn't take long!

to be fair, there has been a lot of community complaining about the declining realm numbers and lack of enjoyment therefore. however, love that you're coming to red and that you're looking on the bright side of things. game on!

As I only play the Green Realm (and not even Special), you'll have one less competitive player visiting the site.

Bye.

I'm glad we're trying something different, and I hope it benefits our community. Between this and the ad space we're taking out, I hope we can have full and productive realms this coming round.

This (closing a realm/closing green realm) has been discussed, off and on, for a long time now:

Also, no one ever replied to tmo's thread for a tutorial rewrite: anyone have time now? viewtopic.php?f=13&t=7532&start=0 ::king::

Okay, I actually wasted 20 minutes reading all those threads (and aside from being reminded of how jealous the bourgeoisie are of the Special realm) these are the overpowering stats I compiled:

8 of 12 people voted no to creating a “Team Realm”.

People who are in favor of playing 2 colored realms: 4 (SFB, Rodeojoe, Ein, DK)
Against this idea: 4 (TMO, Ladylord, UD, Injektilo)

People who favor eliminating Special realm: 4 (TMO, Ein, UD, Injektilo)
Against this idea: I didn’t count, but more than 4.

People in favor of closing a realm: 8 (Ski, Megaman, Neon, SFB, Val, Ein, Sombra, presumably Injektilo, and maybe Secret)
* Note: Only 3 of these people play in Green realm with any regularity.
Against This idea: 7 (DK, Logos, Dazhbog, Ladylord, UD, Sethery, Black Viper)

In addition it was revealed that TMO stated that he would not close a realm unless the population was really low, and if he did close a realm it would be his preference to close Special / Test realm before any of the colored realms.

Conclusion: hardly a concensus about anything.

ok, i understand your disappointment and no one is happy that green is being closed, but please keep in mind it's only for 1 round to gauge how things go.

first point, re: allowing players to play multiple realms. tmo has stated time and time again he is not going to do this. we have to accept that.

the mystical one wrote:You may as well remove "Allow people to play in two or more coloured realms" because it will never happen.

Feel free to quote that in your sig in case of hypothetical future event where that occurs, so that you can call me a hypocrite.

from here: Re: Regarding the lack of players (Part 2)

and you only have to look around at the players complaining about lack of kills, lack of numbers etc. yes, a few people stuck their hands up and voted yay or nay in those threads, but in reality, only 2 regular green realm people voted against - yourself and logos. i guess the lack of consensus works both ways. :/

with regard to closing a realm if the population was low, in october 2008 we were complaining about lack of numbers and had 397 players across all 4 realms. last week we had 295. if we count the people who had played in the last three days of each realm, we get 198 players. as i recall green was started because blue and red kept filling up (300 players). if we add in special today we have 301 players in total. i'd call that a pretty steep drop in numbers, unfortunately.

also, fwiw, i no longer wish to close special. it's too important to new players at this stage. i think this is a bad trend, but we need all the players we can. rebranding special (to test) and getting people to play coloured realms as well (there are heaps of people who only play special. i can only assume that's because it's 'special' and who wouldn't want to play in the 'special' realm.) is the path forward i believe.

Okay, so I could theoretically start up the round tonight, with an extension so that the next two days are both round 1.

Discuss so that I know it if's a smart idea. I won't be around again until tonight (hotel internet at that point) and I'll have to make sure I'll be able to get on Wednesday to extend.

i've never heard someone complain about an early reset. i think this can only be a good thing as although a small percentage of players might be waiting till the 16th, many more players will check the realms for a few days after closing and then possibly give up. the people aware of my reset thread will be reading the forums anyway most likely.

That's the best idea yet. Keep the Lemmings jumping off the cliff as part of their daily ritual. It's the one - two week lags between rounds that break attention spans and lose users. Betcha closing Green won't do squat! :)

A continuous chum slick MUST be maintained.

Even though I'm rather new to Nuklear Lord, I'm going to give Red realm a try this time. I started reallllly late into that round, so maybe this time I can actually compete!

I don't have time to go back & read all the other threads, but I couldn't help but notice that DK pointed out I was against several ideas for various reasons. I don't recall them, but I would like to point out I made the move to Blue a good 2 or 3 rounds ago. I discovered that my own playing style (trying hard to get as many DKs as I can, but not camping; having limited time to play each day do to my varying work schedule, etc.) worked better in Blue than Green. As it is, I missed nearly a week total of playing time in Blue this latest round and still finished in the Top 20. That always has been my goal, and I feel I've succeeded well in Blue since making the move. I am ok, currently, with the closing of Green as long as it's temporary. I might try a hand at Red this time... but that's a mighty big might.

Just for the sake of my sanity, I'm not resetting tonight. Tomorrow evening if I can manage, I'll reset then, and extend the day so that day 1 is thursday + friday. This highly depends on when my wife gets out of surgery and if I actually do get back to the computer, which I'm not really guaranteeing.

 Holy Crap tmo! I believe a realm reset can more than wait until things have resolved themselves with you and your family! Take care of what needs to be done... sometimes there are more important things in life than dragon slaying. I hope all goes well and wish your wife a speedy recovery.

I'm coming back for this round, and I would have played Green, but I respect this decision. All in all, at this time, it seems sensible to me. I hope your wife is doing alright, TMO.

I want to see this game grow just as much as anyone else. But like I said before, too much competition in blue can be very discouraging for new players--I have seen it with my own eyes. Hopefully the closing of green won't add to this problem :prays:

what do you mean? i can't understand how having more players to kill can be bad for the game?

there's no online duelling in blue, so i don't see how this competition can hurt new payers. can you tell me why competition is bad for new players? i'm interested to know.
