Nuklear, the new LoRD

Postby Hidden Imp on Tue Apr 27, 2010 7:45 pm

I've been thinking a bit about how different it is to play this game now, as compared to the mid-90s. I suppose that is a bit obvious, but it's still fun to run your mind over for a few minutes, possibly.

About a week ago, I was in-game to get a kill and had to wait out my competition. So, I picked my computer up, carried it to the living room, and began watching baseball, all while maintaining a connection. Try that in 1995. :P

You can talk on the phone while playing, most players in the 90s couldn't even receive a call when they were on a BBS.
I've seen a number of players discuss their spreadsheets of their days on LoRD, available on any computer with internet access, which is pretty much anywhere at this point.

This is how McChazem plays LoRD:

Who else has a set-up that could not have been pulled off in your wildest mid-90s dream?

We do. My husband has our Blue-Ray, TiVo, his computer, our cable box, and our Wii set up basically the same way McChaz does. On our flat screen LG tv... lol..

i've played my day of LoRD from my iphone. that would have sounded like science ficiton back in the glory days of the bbs!

other things that didn't exist back then (to my knowledge) are knowledge of the workings of LoRD (i.e. kill probabilities), ability to customise the look of LoRD through the terminal (i.e. remove the crappy standard fonts) and a well populated forum.

great topic imp. you've got me thinking now! :)

I remember I had to play either before I went to school, or after 9pm because my parents wouldn't let me tie up the phone line so I could go on the BBS.

Oh and connecting to the internet is nicely silent now :D

hehe on that note.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2j_hXHEjX4

I think even in 1995 if you said to someone "I play LORD in a resizable window" they'd be like "woooaahh"

why is your resolution set to 1024x768 (4:3) on your 1920x1080 (16:9) projector?

ok then. i'd suggest you fix the aspect ratio. but then again, i'm certain that 95% of the population doesn't notice it, so it's probably not an issue.

this is gonna sound really pro-apple, but I want an iPad. Mainly so I can have a light, portable comic book reader for all my downloaded comics :)!

Why is it 'pro-apple' to say you want something that you have a rational reason for wanting to own?

I'm not 'pro-banana' because I bought a bunch last night to eat. ;)

I'm a PC. You're a Mac. Shove it :)! Actually, that's the only thing I want an iPad for - reading comic books. I could care less about the internet, apps, or using it for anything else.. Have thought it would be cool to be able to pick up a 'pad' and read my comics and books since I was a teen first discovering Star Trek... about time I can finally realize it (without being forced to buy a 2lb tablet, even as nice as those are)

Laugh... now... to bring it back on-topic... I just picked up a Tandy CoCo 3 - what I'd absolutely love is an ACTIVE LoRD BBS that's still accessible with dialup... Why? Because I've never played LoRD from a Tandy CoCo 3, of course!

along those lines, I've been playing with my old IBM XT 8088, and am about ready to get it up with a 10bT ethernet connection and online - when I do, I think I'll have to update this with a pic of playing LoRD through a telnet session on my old XT w/ a CGA monitor... really mix the old and new school methods :)

(yes. I'm nerdy enough to like old PCs. Sue me - they had character, and they're easy to hack these days)

Many of you might not know this, but Maverick and I caught up a little while ago. Here's photographic proof:

Actually, I believe in the diagram above it is me who gets Drew Barrymore.
