Login screen idea?

Postby Valkyrie on Thu Jan 07, 2010 7:47 pm

I know that a cluttered login screen would be as confusing as a nearly-blank one when it comes to deciding what realm to choose for the first time. What if we tried something like one of these?

Idea 1 - list of rules YES/NO, viewing required before choosing realm
Spoiler! :
View realm rules - (B)lue, (G)reen, (R)ed, (T)estial:

B
Rules for the Blue Realm:
Camping: YES
Competition: YES
Sudden Death (duel killing w/o asking first): NO
Cloning: NO
Teamplay: NO
(E)nter this realm, or (M)ain menu?

G
Rules for the Green Realm:
Camping: NO
Competition: YES
Sudden Death (duel killing w/o asking first): NO
Cloning: NO
Teamplay: NO
(E)nter this realm, or (M)ain menu?

R
Rules for the Red Realm:
Camping: NO
Competition: YES
Sudden Death (duel killing w/o asking first): YES
Cloning: NO
Teamplay: NO
(E)nter this realm, or (M)ain menu?

T
Rules for the Testial Realm:
Camping: YES
Competition: YES
Sudden Death (duel killing w/o asking first): YES
Cloning: NO
Teamplay: YES
(E)nter this realm, or (M)ain menu?

Idea 2 - color-coded, red = no, green = yes, viewing required before choosing realm
Spoiler! :
View realm rules - (B)lue, (G)reen, (R)ed, (T)estial:

B
Rules for the Blue Realm: Camping Competition Sudden-death Cloning Teamplay
(E)nter this realm, or (M)ain menu?

G
Rules for the Green Realm: Camping Competition Sudden-death Cloning Teamplay
(E)nter this realm, or (M)ain menu?

R
Rules for the Red Realm: Camping Competition Sudden-death Cloning Teamplay
(E)nter this realm, or (M)ain menu?

T
Rules for the Testial Realm: Camping Competition Sudden-death Cloning Teamplay
(E)nter this realm, or (M)ain menu?

I like the first option better. It'll be clearer to those who are first time players here I think. I never read the rules page before I started playing because to be honest I didn't know it exsisted. Does anyone actually pay attention to reading the fine print so to speak? Lay it all out from sign in and call it a day. Break the rules get a spanking. That's how I learned my lesson.

the only problem with this (great) idea is that even though we mention camping, no one knows what it is. same goes for online duel killing. i recall as a noob not understanding camping and even killing someone who was online (or at least attacking them, i don't believe i was successful) without knowing it was wrong as i didn't understand what the difference between online and offline was. maybe i'm stupid?

the other problem is exactly what luna said, no one will read it anyway, however we have to at least try, so i think it's worthwhile.

I like the first one.

There should be a "See the rules page on the website for more detailed information"

We also need the detailed rules like to be more obvious too.

I agree. Something like "Failure to read the rules will result in decreased gameplay enjoyment. Please see full rules and explanation of terms for your chosen realm in the forum link, if for no other reason than to familiarize yourself with the punishments for breaking them."

Also, re: more obvious links, could we get a set of links/drop-down menus across the whole top of the screen? That little gray hidden "more" is so stealthy. ::ninja::

A bar beneath the one that says User Control Panel etc etc, could have a menu series that includes the following: FAQ (dropdown for Forum and LoRD FAQ selections), Search, Community (dropdown for the regular members alpha list, Player Pix, forum and chatroom), About, and Gameplay (dropdown for Rules, Tutorial, Previous Games). That's only five headings, so there could be room for additions later on.

perhaps a banner above the stats page would be beneficial? i'm assuming that's the one page *everyone* looks at?

it could be an announcement type thing?

"See the rules page on the website for more detailed information. You are responsible for knowing the rules of your chosen realm. Failure to read the rules will have no bearing on the execution of punishment for breaking them." :tsktsk::

I think the IRL for login screens is about 5 words.

Ok, but then you have those (like me...I'm such a bad girl) who also rarely check the stats page. Then there are those who I know for a fact never check the stats page because they don't care enough to do so. I've also spoken to "newbies" who didn't even know that you could check the stats...oy vey, dealing with them feels a little like this ::banghead:: . I say make it very clear during the initial log in when you are prompted to pick your realm that the rules are strictly enforced and you as the player are responsible for reading them. Also, state where they can be found. As for the actual rules they do need a little tweeking for newcomers. Maybe add a LORD dictionary? (i.e. what is camping?)

hmm, interesting. i'd never really considered that some people don't check the stats page. perhaps we should chat to some of the newer players and see if they understand the rules etc.

this might be a good time to start using the midnight master accounts (or other) to welcome people, help out and try to explain camping violations etc.

also, we do have a rules page which explains camping (though perhaps not as well as we would like and we also have the wiki. they both need some love and attention though.
