Facebook recruiting

Postby Jessrond on Sat Nov 19, 2011 2:07 am

There is a facebook "app" that basically connects to a poor/slowly run telnet server that hosts many door/bbs games... we should recruit those players to something not run on what feels like a modem that would be described as a number of bauds without a K at the end.

Back alley bbs is the group running these, we should try to hopefully get back to 3 realms.

I played the facebook LoRD for a little bit, mainly to see if I could break gambling. Since gambling is unlimited there (ig you have a horse), I was able to multiple my gold by a factor of 10 in one day just by gambling for 20 minutes.

Anyway, I also posted in the inn "for a competitive game go to lord.nuklear.org" I don't know if anybody followed that.

I think anyone who decides to play lord on facebook is doing it for the novelty. Like "oh hey I remember that game!" then they play for a bit and forget about it. I remember downloading legend of the blue dragon for my phone and it turned out to be a version of that shitty green dragon game. Didn't stop random people from trying it due to nostalgia.

It seems to me that most people get here through nostalgia, but when they discover the community and the intense compeition--though it seems to have grown somewhat quieter lately--they stay. Just because someone's playing for nostalgia doesn't mean they won't get into it if they find a site like this. That's how I got here.

Yeah, same here. I was bored one night and thought "what was that game I played in the computer lab in middle school? Legend of the Red Dragon? I wonder if I can find that game anywhere." And then I found Nuklear. I didn't even realize the game was based so heavily on the mmo component. In middle school, mostly just grinded in the forest and never got beyond level 9; once in a while there would be people to kill, but they never gave me a lot of exp. Wow, it's just 5 more days until my one year anniversary of finding this site.

I joined here out a desperate desire for old school BBS gaming.

I would love to have us back at 450 people... and then a waiting list.

I never got past level 6 because I never sent in $20 to the local BBS, which would not let you access the whole game without that donation. But I remembered thinking the game was fun. I had no idea how much there was to such a simple game, and discovering the community, the level of competition and the strategy form kept me on this site.

I think this is one of the biggest problems we face here at Nuklear. Almost all of us remember the game being a huge amount of fun, despite never making any progress. We just wanted to amass exp and gold and buy huge weapons. It was fun!

However now all we want to do is warn people and tell them to hurry up and slay the dragon. There really is two styles and the majority of people prefer the old style. We need to be more aware of this. We have two realms, but it's not a simple division and people are confused. They remember duel killing people, but also sitting on level 2 with Blood Swords. I'd be interested in abolishing the camping rule for this reason alone. I don't know what the long term effect would be, but it would be an interesting experiment.

Maybe enforcing conditions for strictly competitive play does drive some people away. But for my own part, now that I'm no longer in seventh grade, the game wouldn't have retained my long-term interest without the community, the discovery that LoRD requires serious strategic thinking if you want to do well, and the element of tough competition.

Absolutely, but all evidence says that you and I are in the minority. Look at how many players have been playing for many years and can barely scrape together two DKs in a round.

Also, playing to win is exhausting, especially if you're playing in red realm. Nuklear history is littered with players who had stellar peak performances (ie Hotshot and Dream Warrior/Blitz/Mr. Scary had three round win streaks; Magneto won his second and third rounds, etc.) But other than Einherjar and tmo, these players burnt out and stopped playing. If you play whenever convenient and don't care about winning, though, then the game takes at most 15 minutes per day and isn't draining at all; hence why you see so many players who play for years without coming close to a title. At least that's my theory. Perhaps our resident statistician in psychology could weigh in on this.

You might be right. Although I never had a performance record that good--in part because of putting real life first--I sort of burnt out, hence my long-ish hiatus. Sometimes it just gets way too tempting to prioritize LoRD above things you shouldn't prioritize it above, and so that becomes a problem if you can't keep it under control. That was also part of it. I think I'm going to do alright with that this round. I also still have the convenience of a flexible schedule, but I have to be disciplined about not letting LoRD distract me when other things are much more important.

We also tell them not to suicide.

BTW, who are you and what have you done with the real Injektilo?

Heh, but all jokes aside, I think the more I observe this place (as opposed to playing) the more I see where you come from. I think hell just froze over....

I'm beginning to take a more pragmatic view on things here. We spend a lot of time telling people how they should play, none more so than me. If we stop that, we alienate the hardcore players. If we enforce rules too much, we make it less fun for new players.

As always, I have no answers, just thoughts. I'll probably change my mind again in 10 minutes time, but I think we *could* benefit from going back to the roots of the game, offering a traditional game.
